It’s Games Time!

The largest multi-sport event to be held in Australia this decade is coming to the Gold Coast from 4 – 15 April. Home to glorious beaches, year round sunshine and a vibrant seaside lifestyle, Coolangatta is the perfect location to play host to a Games event, with plenty of action in both our seaside suburb and at The Strand at Coolangatta.

CENTRE ACCESS

The Strand at Coolangatta will be open every day before, during and after the Games, so you can continue to access the best dining, shopping and entertainment in Coolangatta, around the clock.

The Oceanway pathway from Kirra will remain open, so walking in past the picturesque Kirra Hill is the perfect option for those on foot. If you choose to cycle in, there are bike lock racks located at the northern end of the centre on the corner of Marine Parade and Dutton St, outside the Coolangatta Library entrance. There will also additional racks installed at Kirra Surf Club and Greenmount to house up to 160 bicycles.

For public transport and bus timetables, download the Journey Planner app or visit www.jp.gc2018.com

PARKING AT THE STRAND

The Strand’s underground car park will remain open as normal during the Games, with both entries from Dutton St and Warner St remaining accessible (via Griffith St).

ROAD CLOSURE – MARINE PARADE

The table below outlines the road closure dates for Marine Parade. Note this area will still be open to pedestrians.

The Strand car park will be accessed as usual via Dutton St and Warner St, however upon exiting vehicles will be detoured to Griffith Street from both exits.

GETTING HERE

Transport options to the venue include:

1. Free Surfside Bus. Buses will drop spectators at the existing bus stops on Griffith Street where they will be marshalled to walk around the perimeter of The Strand and down Warner Street to the event entrance.
2. Park ‘n’ Ride. From Betty Diamond Oval in Tugun or the Varsity Lakes Train Station. All users will be dropped at the Greenmount car park and marshalled towards the entrance point in the park opposite the Coolangatta Hotel.
3. Riding or Walking. Kirra Point is still open to pedestrian traffic and there will be additional bike racks installed at Kirra Surf Club and Greenmount to house up to 160 bicycles during the event.
4. Driving. Parking at The Strand or surrounding areas. See Parking at The Strand information above.

VOLLEY VIBES

Coolangatta will be transformed into a Beach Volleyball hub during the Games, with the Commonwealth’s best athletes competing on our beachfront stage. But if you missed out on tickets to the main event, don’t despair. There will still be plenty of opportunity to head to the beach and catch some volley action at the free Coolangatta Beach Volleyball courts, located in front of The Strand.

The public beach courts are proudly presented by The Strand at Coolangatta and are free to the Southern Gold Coast community year round. With all eyes on Coolangatta for the Beach Volleyball events, everyone can enjoy the courts during the Games with the Community Beach Volleyball Program.

From 9:00am to 5:00pm from Friday 6 – Sunday 15 April, the courts will be set up for free public access. Simply sign in at the Volleyball Queensland Tent, get a ball and play! Free Come and Try coaching sessions will also be held from 9am – 10am and 2pm – 3pm daily, giving locals and visitors of all ages the opportunity to try the sport, learn some new skills from the experienced coaches and showcase Coolangatta’s beachside beauty.
